JOAN by Alexander McQueen A/W 1998
The collection was presented in an industrial depot. Shaven-head blood-red-eyed models walked the asphalt runway as warehouse lanterns sombrely lit the catwalk. For JOAN’s finale music was replaced by the crackling of burning wood chips. A blaze of fire encircled McQueen’s Joan of Arch (or the representation of her ghost) as a lullyby started playing.
The show represented a celebration of femininity’s power and was also a reminder of past repressions.
